Recommended Arts and Crafts Shops

Chiang Mai is further characterized by being one of the world's largest centers of cottage industries . Numerous handicrafts are traditional to the region and craftsmen, using skills passed down from generation to generation, continue to produce marvels like silverware, lacquerware, celadon pottery, silk and cotton, hand-painted paper umbrellas and more. Here is a true shopper's paradise and there is plenty of scope for browsing for unusual gifts and souvenirs. But buying is not all, and just as thrilling are visits to workshops, even whole villages devoted to handicrafts, like Bo Sang, to see the crafts in the making. The following are a few of the places which I recommend while you are in Chiang Mai:

A) Antiques:

Sipsong Panna - located at 95/19 Nimanhaemin Road, Chiang Mai, Tel: 216-096 - This is one of the best antique stores in all Chiang Mai for purchasing antique silver bowls, trays, jewelry, coins and opium weights. This tends to be one of my favorite store and I visit it frequently.

Lanna House - located directly across from the Regent, It has a extensive and impressive collection of antiques from Northern Thailand, Laos, & Burma. The owners name is Wolfgang and he is extremely knowledgeable and definitely a person to know if you are interested in Northern Thai Artifacts.

B) Hand-woven Fabrics:

Nadakwang - located at 6/1-3 Nimmanhemin Rd. This store as an excellent array of traditional Northern style fabrics, which are hand-woven.

Shinawatra - located at 145/1-2 Sankamphaeng Rd. A local house with branches in Sankamphaeng, in Chiang Mai on Hua Kaew Road and in Bangkok. They produce some of the best silk products in all of Thailand.
