The tour from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai via Tha Ton by boat is a good way to see the countryside. Along the Highway 107 you will pass through Mae Rim, Mae Taeng, Chiang Dao, and Farng and then Tha Ton. Just outside of Chiang Mai on Highway 107 your first stop should be at Mae Rim to visit the large Orchids & Butterflies Farm. There is a local market at Mae Tang, you may wish to make a shot stop before going to Chiang Dao.

Chiang Dao is rich in forest, farmlands and mountain foothills and home of the famous Chiang Dao Caves. It is approximately the halfway point between Chiang Mai and Farng. Visit Chiang Dao Elephant Camp to watch Elephants take daily bath in the stream and Elephants shows. After shows take an elephant riding into the jungle.

Continue drive to Fang and then Tha Ton, a small provincial town for lunch. Tha Ton has always been an important trading post along the Thai-Burma border. The town sits on both sides of the Mae Kok River which leads to Chiang Rai. One side of the river was once owned by Burma, but has been owned by Thailand since the beginning of this century. Take a 4-hour boat trip along the Mae Kok River to Chiang Rai. En route, visit hill tribe villages.
