"Fishermen of Mekhong River"
Chiang Saen is an ancient little town 18 miles north of Chiang Rai and 8 miles from Sop Ruak. The town sits on the Mekong River hence is a popular spot for visitors to set off on a short long-tail boat ride to the Golden Triangle. The Chiang Saen town site sits on the ruins of the Chiang Saen kingdom dating back to 1325. There are some interesting pagodas and Buddha images around Chiang Saen, most so old they are crumbling back to the earth.
It is well worth wandering around Chiang Saen and exploring its several temples and various ancient ruins. There are plenty of people to be seen on the Laos side and there appears to be a village there, although conditions appear rudimentary. The local long-tail boats will take you almost to the other side for a price although one wonders how the Laos people feel about the boatloads of gawking visitors who stream passed all day long.
