Mae Hong Son is a small town on the Burmese border where you can take a day trip from Chiang Mai by plane. Take an elephant riding, a boat trip along the river with a visit to Long Neck Karen villages and return to Chaing Mai in the evening. You can also stay for a few days in the luxury resort whiles taking day trips into the hill tribe areas.
Pai If you just can not get enough, you can also take a long drive for 171 miles from Chiang Mai, with an overnight in Pai, a small lovely town halfway between these two cities. This road is in a fertile valley surrounded by towering mountains with local people working in their fields. You will travel through small hamlets and villages with traditional wooden Thai homes decorated with flower gardens. Smiling faces and warm hellos greet you as you are passing this delightful road.
