Planning tours detail: Phitsanulok lies about half way between Bangkok and Chiang Mai. Nestled on the banks of the lazily flowing Nan River. Like the river that bisects the town, the pace of life in Phitsanulok ticks by slowly. Though its name might sound more like an urinary tract infection, the town itself is a pleasant one with plenty of activities and sights for visitors to enjoy. Many tourists use Phitsanulok as a base for traveling to other nearby historical sights and parks: the spectacular ruins of Sukhothai are only an hour away, and just downstream on the Ping River is Kampaeng Phet, the site of older temples and cultural museums.
A local attraction are the "flying vegetable" vendors at the Phitsanolok night markets - chefs stir fry wok-loads of morning glory then propel the contents up in the air to be caught by a waiter ready to be served up. Another local curiosity are the house boats along the river, Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat which contains one of Thailand's most revered Buddha images, the Chinnarat Buddha, The Folk Arts Museum and The Buddha Foundry. |
